NEW YORK- The rubber game against the Pirates, before a very long road trip ahead for the New York Yankees. Amazing, as last night unexpectedly Max Fried was announced as tonight’s starter (Game 2 of the doubleheader). Going on the IL with a left elbow bone bruise, he had just recently completed a rehab assignment with Triple-A Scranton Wilks/Barre.
Max Fried has been valuable in his 10 starts this season posting a 3.21 ERA with 50 K’s in 61 IP. Words can’t express enough how huge of a return this is for this staff. He could possibly be on a limit, but with his groundball skill and the ability to get up to any velocity per whatever the situation maybe it is great for him to face the heavy aggressive Pirates. One thing that is worth watching is that Pirates LF Bryan Reynolds who is batting third tonight, he is 7-for-23 (.304) and a HR off of Max Fried in his career.
The Yankees really got to seal this one tonight, this road trip coming in Philly and then a full week in Chicago. Going into that strong is a MUST. Got to have that basic strategy of taking your walks, stealing bags, use speed/power/contact, and do the little things right. Helping out the rotation that has bailed out this offense way too many times to count this season.
Pirates sending out another youngster in Bubba Chandler. The heater definitely has high-velo in that fastball, so that hitters don’t touch it. Again, similar to the mindset on Keller, Chandler’s main struggles this season are that loss of control and lack of command and believe it or not happens first time through the order majority of the time. Lack of the zone inflated his ERA, know the pitcher, and take advantage of it.
