NEW YORK- The Yankees are playing another doubleheader this time with the Pirates. Appointing Spencer Jones as the “27th Man” and he will be DHing and batting third in Game 1. The Yankees will be looking to clinch the series in Game 1 this afternoon, and have to be going into today with happy smiles as for the first time Gerrit Cole and Max Fried are both pitching in pinstripes with not one of them being hurt. Amazing sight.
Gerrit Cole will be toeing the slab in Game 1 coming off an outing against the Dodgers, where he did take the loss, but the stuff was very good and impressive against a stellar lineup. He will look to keep that confidence going and look to dominate a Pirates offense that can really score. Using that changeup was a very good asset against the Dodgers no matter that was early or late in the counts, he established the spot where he wanted his flat-out and still provided those wipe out breaking balls. It was some vintage Cole last outing. Location on the fastball today and consistent command of the changeup will help Cole adapt to this Pirates lineup.
The Pirates will be sending out RHP Mitch Keller in Game 1 who is highly struggling and has been for a bit now. Keller has let up 13 home runs this season, and add that to a decrease in a massive way in his K Rate. With Keller you will need to be ready for his attack with the sinker that does provide a lot of soft contact with it and left-handed closed stance hitters are not a fan of it. Key is to take away Keller’s asset and grind the counts, he will leave one in the sweet spot. Teams have attacked him in that aspect all season now.
