NEW YORK- The Yankees had a very good night on the offensive side of things, taking down the Pirates 8-5. Offense jumped out to an early lead, and then added a few more big hits as the game went on. Positive performance from the offense and the bullpen. Weathers couldn’t quite get things back on track.
Weather’s Outing
After his offense gave him a early 4-0 lead, Weathers proceeded to implode in ugly fashion. He got hit very hard in the first inning, but was helped by some very good plays made behind him from the defense. His fastball seemed very flat basically the whole outing and the Pirates took it away by having great takes against it as Weathers had trouble getting it in for strikes, and then the off speed play right in the heart of the plate. In the second inning Weathers gave up 3 runs on 4 hits. In the middle of the Pirates hitting frenzy in that inning Jared Triolo was tipping his changeup which was being hit hard all inning. Weathers had seen him do it one time and had QUITE the stare for Triolo. Weathers mind was being played with and it very much showed. Then, the next two runs came on an absolute opposite field blast by a hot swinging Esmerlyn Valdez who showed his insane pop with tremendous bat speed.
FInal Line: 4.2 IP, 7 H, 5 ER, 2 BB, 5 K (4.40 ERA)
Smooth Jazz
What a last two days for Jazz Chisholm Jr. Hitting two home runs tonight resulting in a 5 RBI night. Last night against the Dodgers hit an opposite field go-ahead HR off of Evan Philips. Tonight in the first inning Jazz came up after Goldy reached on a fielder’s choice and Bellinger singled and after seeing two heaters he got a hanger and hammered it into the right field seats. Then, just two innings later with Bellinger on first once again, the Jazz a 3-2 slider right down the right field line. Both amazing swings and they both came on a basis of being later in the count. Point being that Jazz has many tools and has a chance to be a difference maker in so many different aspects of the game, and when he takes pitches and sees what he is working with THE POWER IS REAL. When he gets on base he’s a lethal threat to steal some bags. Jazz stays hot and keeps this going, it’s a great positive for the New York Yankees and very much needed.
Brent Headrick Deserves Respect Across The League
You ask other fanbases around the league and mention Brent Headrick you might get some confused looks. When in reality they wish their team had a dude that is absolute nails every time he is out on the mound like Brent Headrick. Pitched the seventh inning tonight striking out the side (Valdez, Reynolds, and Lowe) with the fastball-slider K mix. That’s the thing he also provides a very good sinker that he just always seems to use in at the great exact time and contact hitting right-handed hitters seem to have very much trouble with it, and a split finger that has provided a lot of whiffs as of late. All season he has seemed to bail out the Yankees in some way or just go out and hold a close lead. He has shut down some very good hitters all season and really doesn’t seem to run into trouble. Year in Matt Blake’s lab was very perfect for him. Very good low-effort crossfire delivery which always leads to that elite deception for him, and why he has been so consistent on never falling behind. Stats prove it all around, Headrick simply just does not fall behind to batters, your everyday strike thrower. No, he isn’t to come and blow 99+ past hitters, but he will come in and be a pitcher NOT a thrower. Effectiveness is KEY. Stands at a 0.54 ERA in his last 15 games pitched while striking out 22 batters in that span. Pitching coach Matt Blake can only help to smile at that 28.4 (K%).
Fun Fact: Brent Headrick graduated high school not even 15 minutes away from me.
